Those Lavender Whales prepare to “Lose My Mind” on new album

For those  unfamiliar with Columbia SC’s Those Lavender Whales, there’s definitely a backstory worth telling. In 2014, lead singer/guitarist Aaron Graves (also a founder of Fork & Spoon Records), was diagnosed with a rather large brain tumor. While the word “daunting” comes to mind, it just kind of comes up short here. See, Graves is also married to wife and bandmate Jessica, and together they have a young daughter. Coupled with the fact that being a working class musician isn’t exactly a winning lottery ticket, and you have a rather scary story to tell.

Fortunately, the Columbia, SC music scene rallied around him and helped him to raise some of the necessary funds for him to seek treatment at Duke University. With his tumor in remission, and the future looking more optimistic, the band sought out to record their new album with Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick (also a former Columbia,SC resident).

“Lose My Mind” brings a healthy dose of sunny 90’s nostalgia with classic Ric Ocasek guitar tones and synths reminiscent of The Rentals, Weezer and even That Dog. You can listen to the new song below and pre-order the new album “My Bones Are Singing”, (available April 7th on Fork & Spoon) here.
